Question 223655
A rectangle carpet has a perimeter of 236 inches. The length of the carpet is 22 inches more than the width. what are the carpets dimensions...?

Step 1. Perimeter P means adding up all 4 sides of a rectangle.

Step 2. Let w be the width.

Step 3. Let w+22 be the length.

Step 4. Then, P=w+w+w+22+w+22=4w+44=236

*[invoke explain_simplification "4w+44=236" ]

With {{{w=48}}} and {{{w+22=70}}}. And {{{P=2(48+70)=236}}} which is a true statement

Step 5. ANSWER: The width is 48 inches and the length is 70 inches.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
