Question 223573
The perimeter of a rectangular field is 1,200 feet and the field is 50 feet longer than it is wide. what is the length, in feet, of the field?

Step 1. Perimeter P means adding up all 4 sides of the rectangle.

Step 2. Let w be the width.

Step 3. Let w+50 be the length.

Step 4. Then, P=1200=w+w+w+50+w+50.

Step 5. Solving leads to the following steps...

*[invoke explain_simplification "1200=w+w+w+50+w+50" ]

{{{w=275}}} then {{{w+50=325}}} and {{{P=2(275+325)=1200}}} which is a true statement.

Step 6. ANSWER: The length of the field is 325 yards.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
