Why did you stop there?

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ x^2 + (x - 7)^2 = (x + 1)^2]

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ x^2 + x^2 - 14x + 49 = x^2 + 2x + 1]

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ x^2 - 16x + 48 = 0]

The quadratic factors, but one of the roots is too small -- if you subtract 7 to get the measure of the shorter leg, you will have a negative number. So the larger of the two roots is the length of the longer leg.
