Question 221399
2x^2 - 5x - 6xy + 15y
First we group terms, this can be tricky since at times the terms that should be grouped to simplify are not already given close by
So to group just add parentheses
(2x^2 - 5x)+(- 6xy + 15y), now factor each parenthesis
((2x^2 - 5x)/(x))+((- 6xy + 15y)/(-3y), simplify
x(2x - 5)-3y(2x - 5) now we have similar factors (2x-5)
I think the best way to see this is to rename 2x-5, lets call it C for now and the result looks like this xC - 3yC
Now we factor out the C
(xC)/C + (-3yC)/C
C(x-3y)
Replace C with its original value 2x-5
(2x-5)(x-3y) is your answer
