Question 221405
There were 6 more women on a committee than men. If the committee was made up of 30 people, how many men were on the committee?

Step 1. Let y be the number of men.

Step 2. Let y+6 be the number of women

Step 3. y+y+6=30 since the committee was made of of 30 people.

Step 4. Solving yields the following steps

{{{2y+6=30}}}

Subtract 6 from both sides of the equation.

{{{2y+6-6=30-6}}}

{{{2y=24}}}

Divide by 2 to both sides of the equation

{{{2y/2=24/2}}}

{{{y=12}}} and {{{x=12+6=18}}} and note the total is 30 people.

Step 5. ANSWER. There are 12 men in the committee.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
