Question 221194
There were 360 people at a play. The admission price was $3 for adults and $1 for children. The admission receipts totaled $740. How many adults and how many children attended?

Step 1. Let x be the number of adult tickets.

Step 2. Let 3x be the dollar value of adult tickets.

Step 3. Let 360-x be the number of children tickets

Step 4. Let 360-x be the dollar value of children tickets since they are $1 each.

Step 5. Then 3x+360-x=740 since the admission receipts totaled $740.

Step 6 Simplifying yields the following steps

{{{2x+360=740}}}

Subtract 360 from both sides of the equation

{{{2x+360-360=740-360}}}

{{{2x=380}}}

Divide 2 to both sides of the equation

{{{2x/2=380/2}}}

{{{x=190))) and {{{360-x=170}}}

Check dollar value...{{{3*190+160=570+170=740}}}...a true statement.

Step 7. ANSWER: There are 190 adult tickets and 170 children tickets sold.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
