Question 216676
A vector has a magnitude of 18.3 centimeters and a direction of 38 degrees.find the magnitude of its vertical and horizontal components to the nearest tenth.

Step 1. Let v be the vertical component

Step 2. Let h be the horizontal component.

Step 3. Then {{{v=abs(v)*sin(theta)}}} and {{{h=abs(v)*cos(theta)}}} where {{{abs(v)=18.3}}} and {{{theta=38}}}.

Step 4. Solving, {{{v=18.3sin(38)=11.267=11.3}}} centimeters and {{{h=18.3cos(38)=14.42=14.4}}} centimeters.

Step 5. ANSWER: The vertical component is 11.3 centimeters and the horizontal component is 14.4 centimeters.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
