Question 215920
The length of the rectangular tennis court at Wimbledon is 6 feet longer than twice the width. If the courts perimeter is 228 feet,what are the courts dimensions

Step 1. Let w be the width and let w+6 be the length.

Step 2. Perimeter P is when you add up all four sides of the rectangle. That is,

{{{P=w+w+w+6+w+6=228}}}

{{{4w+12=228}}}

Step 3. Solving yields the following steps. Subtract 12 from both sides of the equation.

{{{4w+12-12=228-12}}}

{{{4w=216}}}

Divide 4 to both sides of the equation

{{{4w/4=216/4}}}

{{{w=54}}}

With w=54 then w+6=60 and P=54+54+60+60=228...which is a true statement.

Step 4. ANSWER. The width is 54 feet and the length is 60 feet.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
