Question 212633
The perimeter of a rectangle is 56cm. The width is 6cm less than length. Find the width and length.

Step 1. Let l = w+6 length of rectangle and let w be the width

Step 2. Let P = 56 cm be the perimeter. Perimeter means adding the 4 sides of a rectangle. So,

{{{P=w+6+w+6+w+w}}}

{{{P=4w+12}}}

{{{P=4w+12=56}}}

Step 3. Subtract 12 to both sides of equation to get 4w by itself

{{{P=4w+12-12=56-12}}}

{{{4w=44}}}

Step 4. Divide 4 to both sides of equation

{{{4w/4=44/4}}}

{{{w= 11 }}}

Step 5. w = 11 cm is the width of the rectangle and length is 17 cm since

l=w+6=17

Check P=4w+12=4(11)+16=44+12=56  So w = 11 cm and l = 17 cm is the solution.
