Question 212418
the sum of the sides of a triangle is 100 inches. the angles are in the continued proportion 1:2:4. find the sides.

Step 1. Let P = Perimeter = 100 inches. A triangular perimeter means adding the three sides.

Step 2.  Let   x = shortest side

Step 3.  Let   2x = middle side

Step 4.  Let   4x = longest side

Step 5. Use Steps 1-4 to get

{{{P = x+2x+4x}}}

{{{P = 100= 7x}}}

Step 6. Solve for x. Divide by 7 to both side of equation to get x

{{{100/7 = 7x/7}}}

{{{100/7 = x}}}

{{{2x = 200/7}}}

{{{4x = 400/7 }}}

Step 7. Check Perimeter P with above values

{{{P=100/7+200/7+400/7=700/7=100}}} Answer ok.

Step 7. Answer is that the sides of the triangle are 100/7, 200/7 and 400/7.

I hope the steps were helpful and clear. Good luck in your studies.

Respectfully,
Dr J
