Question 212368
If the length of a rectangle is 96ft and the perimeter is 397ft. What is the width?

Step 1. Let l = 96 ft length of rectangle and w be the width

Step 2. Let P = 397 be the perimeter. Perimeter means adding the 4 sides of a rectangle. So,

{{{P=l+l+w+w}}}

{{{P=96+96+2w=397}}}

{{{P=192+2w=397}}}

Step 3. Subtract 192 from both sides of equation to get 2w by itself

{{{192+2w-192=397-192}}}

{{{2w=205}}}

Step 4. Divide 2 to both sides of equation

{{{2w/2=205/2}}}

{{{w= 205/2 = 102.5}}}

Step 5. w = 102.5 is the width of the rectangle.

Check P=192+2w=192+2(102.5)=192+205=397.  So w = 102.5 is the solution.
