Question 212340
The measure of an angle is one-third the measure of its supplement. Find the measure of the angle?

Step 1. Let x be the angle.

Step 2. Let 180-x be the supplementary angle.

Step 3. Angle x is one-third of its supplement 180-x which translates to

{{{x=(180-x)/3}}}

Step 4. Multiply by 3 to both sides of equation in Step 3 to get rid of denominator

{{{3x=3(180-x)/3}}}

{{{3x=180-x}}}

Step 5. Add x to both sides of equation in Step 4 to isolate x in one side.

{{{3x+x=180-x+x}}}

{{{4x=180}}}

Step 6. Divide by 4 to both sides

{{{4x/4=180/4}}}

{{{x=45}}}

Step 7. ANSWER: The angle x is 45 degrees and its supplement is 180-45 or 135. Note that 45 is one-third of 135.
