z-scores are the distance a data element happens to be from
the center of the distrubution of data.

Distance is always expressed in terms of some unit of measure.
The unit you use for z-scores is the standard deviation of 
the distribution.
----
So if the z-score of a data element is 1 standard deviation
to the right of the mean, the data element must be 1 standard
deviation to the right.
If the z-score of a data element is 1 standard deviation
to the left of the mean, the element has a z-score of -1.
