Question 203242
OK. I'LL HELP.

Let x=amount of time it takes the pool to fill if both sources are piped in at same time

Then both sources working together fills the pool at the rate of 1/x pool per hour

City water fills at the rate of 1/6 pool per hour, and
The well fills at the rate of 1/10 pool per hour

Then both sources working together fill the pool at the rate of 1/6 + 1/10 pool per hour. So, our equation to solve is:
1/6 +1/10=1/x multiply each term by 30x
5x+3x=30 collect like terms
8x=30 divide each side by 8
x=30/8 or 3 3/4 hours------amount of time it takes the pool to fill if both sources are piped in at same time

CK
In 3 3/4 hours or 30/8 hours, city water fills (1/6)(30/8)=5/8 of the pool
In 3 3/4 hours the well fills (1/10)(30/8)=3/8 of the pool

5/8 +3/8=8/8 or 1 pool

Hope this helps---ptaylor
