In the pythagorean theorem the two sides are (a) and (b), While the hypotenuse is represented by (c).  The two sides are given to us; 6, and 8.  
We can plug these numbers in:
6^2 + 8^2 = c^2  Do the left side of the equation first
36 + 64 = c^2  Add the left side together
100 + c^2  Now take the square root of 100
c = 10
Therefore the hypotenuse is 10feet long
