Since the function definition that you provided is a linear function, the rate of change is constant across the entire domain of the function (and therefore equal to the average rate of change over any interval in the domain), in this case the coefficient on the independent variable: 2


Now if you really meant the function to be: *[tex \LARGE y = x^2], that is another story altogether.  Let me know.
