Question 192819
Translate into a mathematical equation, solve and answer the question.
THE MATH ANXIETY CLUB HAS DETERMINED THAT THE COST , C TO MAKE X DOzEN COOKIES
CAN BE ESTIMATED BY THE FORMULA C=X^2 -77X -160. THEY EXPECT THE SUPPLIES TO
COST 80.00. IF THEY SELL ALL THE COOKIES FOR .25 CENTS EACH, HOW MUCH PROFIT
 CAN THEY PLAN ON MAKING.
:
They say the cost is $80 and the cost equation is x^2 - 77x - 160
Find x when cost = 80:
x^2 - 77x - 160 = 80
x^2 - 77x - 160 - 80 = 0
x^2 - 77x - 240 = 0
Factor to:
(x - 80)(x + 3) = 0
Positive solution
x = 80 dozen cookies ( no negative cookies allowed)
:
Find the revenue if you sell 80 dozen at .25 each
80 * 12 * .25 = $240
Revenue - cost = profit, therefore
240 - 80 = $160 profit
