Well, there's a fundamental flaw with your method you used to find the area. You measured the perimeter of the lake which does NOT give you the area of the lake. I'm assuming that the lake is in an irregular shape (ie it's not a circle or an ellipse), so calculating the area might be tricky. You could approximate it by laying out a grid and estimating the area that way (maybe Adobe Acrobat has a feature like this??). I'm sure there are other methods, but that's all I can think of so far.
