Question 186033
My daughter asked me how old I am. I said in 20 years time I will be twice the age I was 12 years ago. How old am I?

My daughter asked me how old I am.

I said...
<pre><font size = 4 color = "indigo"><b>
I am N years old now and
</pre></font></b>
...in 20 years time I will be...
<pre><font size = 4 color = "indigo"><b>
N + 20, which is
</pre></font></b>
...twice the age I was 12 years ago...
<pre><font size = 4 color = "indigo"><b>
which was N - 12, and twice that is 2(N - 12)

Therefore N + 20 must equal to 2(N - 12).

So we have the equation:

N + 20 = 2(N - 12)

Can you solve that?

Answer: The mother is 44 years old.

Checking: 12 years ago she was 32 and in 20 year's
time she will be 64, which is twice 32. So it checks.
