Question 184637

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ x^2 + 2x - 5 = 0]

This one is a candidate for the quadratic formula:

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ x_{1,2} = \frac{-b \pm sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}]

Your coefficients are: *[tex \Large a = 1], *[tex \Large b = 2], and *[tex \Large c = -5], so:

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ x_{1,2} = \frac{-(2) \pm sqrt{(2)^2 - 4(1)(-5)}}{2(1)}]

You can do your own arithmetic. But note that *[tex \Large sqrt{24} = sqrt{4\cdot 6}= sqrt{4}sqrt{6}]
