Question 25687

4 - x < 3

A linear inequality is solved just like an equation except
sometimes in the last step. In the last step

1. if we divide or multiply by a negative number,
the inequality symbol MUST be reversed.

2. If we divide or multiply by a positive number,
the inequality symbol MUST NOT be reversed.

4 - x < 3

Subtract 4 from both sides

   -x < 3 - 4

   -x < -1

  -1x < -1

Now we must divide both sides by -1, which is a
negative number, so the inequality symbol must be reversed

  -1x/(-1) > -1/(-1)

         x > 1
