Question 181973
A pharmacist has two decongestants, one containing 0.8% pseudoephedrine HCI the other containing 1.4% of the ame substance. A prescription calls for a decongestant containing 1.1% pseudoephedrine HCI. How much of each should be used to produce 4 ounces of a 1.1% solution????
-----------------------------
active + active = active ingredient
0.008x + 0.014(4-x) = 0.011*4 ounces

Multiply thru by 1000 to get:

8x + 14(4-x) = 44

8x + 56 - 14x = 44

-6x = -12

x = 2 oz (amt of 0.8% HCI in the mixture)
4-2= 2 oz (amt of 1.1% HCI in the mixture)
