Question 181805
<font face="Times New Roman" size="+2">

I suspect your two straight lines mean absolute value, something like this:

*[tex \LARGE \text{          }\math |27x - 50|]

Absolute value means:

*[tex \LARGE \text{          }\math x \geq 0\ \ \Rightarrow\ \ |x| = x\ \ \small\wedge\LARGE\ \ x < 0\ \ \Rightarrow\ \ |x| = -x]

So for your expression:

*[tex \LARGE \text{          }\math 27x - 50 \geq 0\ \ \Rightarrow\ \ |27x - 50 | = 27x - 50 \ \ \small\wedge\LARGE\ \ 27x - 50 < 0\ \ \Rightarrow\ \ |27x - 50 | = -(27x - 50)]

So you can say:

*[tex \LARGE \text{          }\math x \geq \frac{50}{27}\ \ \Rightarrow\ \ |27x - 50 | = 27x - 50 \ \ \small\wedge\LARGE\ \ x < \frac{50}{27}\ \ \Rightarrow\ \ |27x - 50 | = -(27x - 50)]

That's about all you can do with this. You might want to send us the rest of the problem as I suspect your *[tex \Large |27x - 50|] was set equal to something. And then next time you need "between two straight lines" hold the Shift key and hit the backslash key right above the Enter key -- it gives you this: |

If you are having trouble reading what I wrote, remember *[tex \Large p\ \ \Rightarrow\ \ q] means "If p then q" while *[tex \Large \small \wedge] means "and" as in: "<i><b>If</b></i> x is greater than or equal to 50 over 27 <i><b>then</b></i> the absolute value of 27x - 50 is equal to 27x - 50 <i><b>and if</b></i> x is less than 50 over 27 <i><b>then</b></i> the absolute value of 27x - 50 is equal to the additive inverse of 27x - 50."
