You find the total number of children in the canyon and the total number of families living there. Then divide the total number of kids by the total number of families. This 'statistic' gives you an idea of the size of the 'average' family. It says nothing about any specific family. Some families will have no kids; others may have many more than 2. Obvioiusly, no family will have 2.41 kids in it.
