Question 24560
<pre>I am having difficulty with 2 step equations reading the
wording and then translating it to numbers. question:
The difference of 8 and the quotient of a number and 6 is 9.
this is what I tried x divided by 8 +6=9 and my answer was
x=24 am I correct
<b><font size = 4>
No, I'm afraid not. Learn these:

The SUM of A and B is A+B
The DIFFERENCE of A and B is A-B
The PRODUCT of A and B is A×B
The QUOTIENT of A and B is A/B

Your problem was:

<font face = "symbol">·</font> The difference of 8 and the quotient of a number and 6 is 9.

Look at the words I have colored <font color = "red">red</font> just below:

<font face = "symbol">·</font> The difference of 8 and the quotient of <font color = "red">a number</font> and 6 is 9.

Replace <font color = "red">a number</font> by <font color = "red">N</font> (" x " or any other letter would do
just as well). We now have:

<font face = "symbol">·</font> The difference of 8 and the quotient of <font color = "red">N</font> and 6 is 9.

Look at the part I have colored red below:

<font face = "symbol">·</font> The difference of 8 and <font color = "red">the quotient of N and 6</font> is 9.

Replace that <font color = "red">red</font> part by <font color = "red">N/6</font>

<font face = "symbol">·</font> The difference of 8 and N/6 is 9.

Now look at the part I have colored red below:

<font face = "symbol">·</font> <font color = "red">The difference of 8 and N/6</font> is 9.

Replace that <font color = "red">red</font> part by <font color = "red">8 - N/6</font>.

<font face = "symbol">·</font> <font color = "red">8 - N/6</font> is 9.

Finally replace the word "is" by an equal sign " = "

<font face = "symbol">·</font> 8 - N/6 = 9

Can you solve that? If not, post again.

   Answer: N = -6
