Question 175037
Let x=the number
then x/4=the number divided by 4
and (x/4)-12=the number divided by 4 and with 12 subtracted from it:
and we are told that this equals 1/6 so our equation to solve is:
(x/4)-12=1/6 multiply each term by 12
3x-144=2 add 144 to each side
3x-144+144=2+144 collect like terms
3x=146 divide each side by 3
x=146/3 = 48 2/3=-----the number

CK
((146/3)/4)-12=1/6
(146/12)-(144/12)=1/6
2/12 = 1/6
1/6 = 1/6
