Question 24041
Let x = the number

Try this for an equation, just translate the sentence:

Twice (the sum of a number and 3) is the number with 1 subtracted from it.

2(x+3) = x-1

How are you at solving equations, now that you have one to solve? Can you do it?

Solve for x
2x + 6 = x -1
x = -7

Check: Take twice the sum of -7+3. That would be 2*(-4), which is -8.
Then, 1 less than -7 is -8, which checks!
