Question 23708
36-d=17. This time a different approach, so you can see a diiferent method:

subtract 36 from both sides, to give -d = -19

Now, this says -1d equals -19. But we want to know what 1d is equal to, not -1d. So we need to manipulate the -1 (NOT THE d)...the d has to remain.

We do this by dividing by -1, since -1/-1 is 1... anything divided by itself is 1.

So, divide both sides by -1, to give d = -19/-1
--> d = 19

=============================================================
Doing it the way i did the first one, we would have:

36-d=17
Add d to both sides: 36 = 17 + d --> or 17+d = 36
subtract 17 from both sides, to give, d = 19

OK?
