Question 168101
Hi, Hope I can help
.
An improper fraction is where the numerator( or top number ) is larger than the denominator ( or bottom number ), an improper faction can be changed to a mixed number ( a whole number, and a fraction )
.
A proper fraction is where the numerator is smaller than the denominator
.
{{{ 1/4 }}} would be proper, since the numerator is smaller
.
Here are some more examples of proper fractions
.
{{{ 2/3 }}}, {{{ 1/50 }}}, {{{ 1200/1201 }}}
.
Here are some examples of improper fractions
.
{{{ 3/2 }}}, {{{ 10/5 }}}, {{{ 700/99 }}}
.
You can write these numbers as mixed numbers
.
You just say how many times can the bottom number ( denominator go into the top number ( numerator ),( or just divide the numbers ), and whatever the remainder is the fraction
.
{{{ 3/2 }}}, 2 goes into 3 one time, so we would put a 1, there is a remainder of one so we would have a fraction of {{{ 1/2 }}}, so the mixed number would be
.
1 {{{ 1/2 }}}
.
 {{{ 10/5 }}}, 5 goes into 10 two times so we put a 2, there is no remainder, so our fraction would be {{{ 0/5 }}}, our mixed number ( in this case a whole number) would be
.
 2 {{{ 0/5 }}}, or just "2"
.
 {{{ 700/99 }}}, 99 goes into 700 seven times, so the number would be 7, there is a remainder of "7" so the fraction would be {{{ 7/99 }}}, the mixed number would be
.
7 {{{ 7/99 }}}
.
This is how you change a mixed number to an improper fraction
.
Let us change some mixed numbers to improper fractions
.
Change 4 {{{ 3/5 }}} to an improper fraction, to do this, you take the whole number ( 4 ), and multiply by the denominator/ bottom number of the fraction ( 5 ), once you multiply, you add the top number or numerator ( 3 ) to your product, then you put your answer over your denominator you started with to get your improper fraction
.
Here is how you do it
.
4 {{{ 3/5 }}}, Multiply the whole number by the denominator of the fraction
.
{{{ 4(5) }}} = {{{ 20 }}}, then you add the numerator of the fraction
.
{{{ 20 + 3 }}} = {{{ 23 }}}, then you put your answer over the original denominor
.
{{{ 23/5 }}}, this is the improper fraction
.
Hope I helped, Levi
