Question 163707
2x+y=5

Make y a function of x

To make y as a function of x means to make y depend on x.

To do so, isolate y. The goal is to place y alone on one side of the equation.

2x + y = 5

Subtract 2x from both sides.

y = -2x + 5....This is your answer.

In the equation, y = -2x + 5, the value of y depends on the value(s) you select for x.

This is why it's called "y as a function of x."

Since, y = f(x), we can also write your answer this way:

f(x) = -2x + 5

I am sure that your teacher wanted the answer to be y = -2x + 5.

I hope this helps.
