This is the "carat" symbol, which means raised to the power.  It's actually the opposite of square root.  If you wanted to square 5, you would write
5^2 or {{{5^2}}} which would be 25.  However, if you wanted to start with 25 and go back to 5, you would take the square root of 25, which is {{{sqrt(25) }}}, and the answer would be 5.
