Question 23208
If you are having trouble with signed numbers and order of operations, see my Lesson Plan at algebra.com under "Signed Numbers."

1. What are the solutions of IxI=3
This means that {{{I^2 =3}}}

To undo a square, you must square root both sides:
{{{ sqrt(I^2) = 0+-sqrt(3) }}}
{{{I = 0+-sqrt(3)}}} = 1.732 or -1.732 approximately

2. Evaluate {{{(-3)^2}}}
{{{(-3)^2 = (-3)*(-3) = 9 }}}

3. Solve: {{{3-2*3-4+8*(2-3)}}}
Do parentheses first:
{{{3-2*3-4+8*(-1)}}}

Do multiplications next:
{{{3- 6 - 4 -8}}}

Subtract from left to right:
{{{-3 - 4 - 8}}}
{{{-7 - 8}}}
{{{-15}}}

4. Find (-5.3)(7.3)

No arithmetic sign between two numbers means to multiply the numbers. Use a calculator, and remember that a negative times a positive is negative!
(-5.3)(7.3)=-38.69
