Question 160550

Let x=cost of a bag of cashews
Then x-0.30=cost of a bag of peanuts (we will deal in $)
And we use 20 bags of each to make 40 bags of a mixture that sells for $1.05 per bag

Cost of the 20 bags of cashews(20x) plus the cost of the 20 bags of peanuts(20(x-0.30)has to equal the cost of the final mixture(40(1.05)), so our equation to solve is:
20x+20(x-0.30)=40*1.05 get rid of parens (distributive)
20x+20x-6=42 add 6 to each side
20x+20x-6+6=42+6 collect like terms
40x=48 divide each side by 40
x=$1.20 per bag--------------cost of a bag of cashews
x-0.30=$1.20-0.30=$0.90 ----cost of a bag of peanuts

CK
20*1.20+20*0.90=40*1.05
24+18=42
42=42

Hope this helps---ptaylor
