Question 156466
When ever I work with percentages, I always divide by 100 to find what 1 percent will equal to. In your problem, 1% of 900,000 is 9,000. The man already owns 5% of the 900,000. to find 5%, multiply 9,000 by 5, which will give you 45,000 shares. the board of directors want him to own 10% of the 900,000. He already owns 5% or 45,000. another 5% will give him 10%, so you are adding 5% to the 5% he already has. 45,000 + 45,000 = 90,000. 90,000 = 10%

Another way to do percentages, particluarly when the numbers are even, is to move the decimal point. For example, 900,000. represents 100% of the shares. Move the decimal point to the left one space - 90,000. - represents 10%. Move the decimal point one more space to the left - 9,000.- represents 1%. But remember, this works best with even or round numbers.
