expand your brackets

{{{a+16=a+4a}}}

{{{a+16=5a}}}

get all you a's on one side by subrtacting 1a from both sides (left and right of the equals sign)

{{{16=4a}}}

Since we are looking for the value of "a", we should really out it on the left hand side of the equation. Nothing mathematical done here, it just looks neater.

{{{4a=16}}}

now divide by 4 to get the value of one "a":

{{{a=16/4=4}}}
