Question 148281
Hi, Hope I can help,
.
The width of a a rectangle is fixed 26cm. What length will make the perimeter greater than 94cm? The length must be greater than ??? cm.
.
The perimeter is all the sides added together, we know the two "width" sides, 26 cm.. The length is equal to "x", the perimeter has to be greater than 94 cm.
We have to find what "x" equals (what "x" equals is the answer to "The length must be greater than ??? cm.") if the perimeter is 94 cm.
.
26 + 26 + x + x = 94
52 + 2x = 94
2x + 52 = 94
.
We will move 52 to the right side
.
2x + 52-52 = 94-52
2x = 42
.
We can find "x" by dividing by 2
.
{{{ 2x/2=42/2 }}}
.
x = 21( In our case, it can't equal 21,What length will make the perimeter greater than 94cm?)
.
The length has to be greater than 21 cm.
.
We can check by replacing "x" with any number greater than 21
.
Let's replace "x" with 30
.
26 + 26 + x + x = ?
.
26 + 26 + 30 + 30 = ?
.
? = 112(It is greater than 94)
.
We will now replace "x" with a number that is really close to 21( remember it has to be greater than 21), 21.0000000000000000000000001.
.
26 + 26 + x + x = ?
.
26 + 26 + 21.0000000000000000000000001 + 21.0000000000000000000000001 = ?
.
? = 94.0000000000000000000000002( It is still greater than 94)
.
The length has to be greater than 21 cm., for the perimeter to be greater than 94 cm.
.
Hope I helped, Levi
