FOIL really is the best way to multiply binomials.

Look at this example:
(x+1)(x-3)=
first terms  x*x
outer terms x(-3)
inner terms 1(x)
last terms 1(-3)

add them up:
{{{x^2-3x+x-3=x^2-2x-3}}}
If you encounter something like {{{(x-2)^2}}}, it's just applying foil to (x-2)(x-2).
