You can put this solution on YOUR website!
24X=18(4.9-X)
24X=88.2-18X
24X+18X=88.2
42X=88.2
X=88.2/42
X=2.1 HOURS GOING @ 24 MPH OR:
24*2.1=50.4 MILES GOING
18(4.9-2.1)=18*2.8=50.4 MILES RETURNING

A cyclist traveled at a rate of 24 mph to visit a nearby town. The cyclist averaged 18 mph on the return trip. If the round trip took 4.9 hours, find the distance to the nearby town.
:
Let d = distance to the nearby town
:
Write a time equation: Time = Distance/speed
:
Time to + time back = 4.9
d%2F24 + d%2F18 = 4.9
:
Choose a multiple of both denominators, multiply equation by 72:
72*d%2F24 + 72*d%2F18 = 72(4.9)
:
Cancel out the denominators:
3d + 4d = 352.8
:
d = 352.8/7
:
d = 50.4 mi; which is what you got. Way-to-Go!!!
