Question 995774: How do I do this problem?
“Safety, Ethical Considerations, and Application Guidelines for the Use of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in Clinical Practice and Research” (Rossi, Hallett, Rossini, Pascual-Leone, Clinical Neurophysiology , Vol 120 Issue 12 (Dec 2009)) reports that the number of research papers addressing TMS was 30 in 1986. That number climbed to 3000 by 2008.
(a) Which of the following linear equations could be used to predict TMS research papers published y by given year x, where x = 0 represents year 1986? Explain/show work.
A. y = 135x + 1986 C. y = 0.0074x + 1986 B. y = 135x + 30 D. y = 0.0074x + 30
(b) Use the equation from part (a) to predict number of TMS research papers published by the year 2024. Round answer to nearest whole number. Show work.
(c) Fill in the blanks to interpret the slope of the equation: The rate of change of TMS research papers published with respect to time is ______________________ per ________________. (Include units of measurement.)

You can put this solution on YOUR website! ordered pairs (0,30), (22,3000)
slope is 2970/22 = 135
point slope formula
y-30=135(x)
y=135x+30
=======
There are 16 years to 2024 from 2008, and the slope of 135 is the number of papers (increase) per year. That answers the last question.
135*16=2160
The predicted papers would be 3000+2160=5160
========
alternatively, in 2024, x becomes 38
135*38=5130
y=5160.
