Make width = 'x'
Length = 3x - 1
Perimeter = 54 feet
Perimeter = 2 x Width + 2 x Length
54 = 2(x) + 2(3x - 1)
54 = 2x + 6x - 2
Collect like terms.
2x + 6x = 54 + 2
8x = 56
x = 7
Width = 7 feet
Length = 20 feet.
