 Let x be the lesser number

     x + 1 be the greater number



Equation:

  x + 1 = 2x - 7



Find x by solving the equation

       1 = 2x - x - 7

       1 = x - 7

   1 + 7 = x - 7 + 7

       8 = x    The lesser number



   x + 1 = the greater nnumber

   8 + 1 = 9



Therefore the greater number is 9 and the lesser number is 8.
