Question 987442: 9(19/12) = 10(7/12)
Problem is: juan is making a gadget that requires 3(1/2) feet of red wire , 5(1/3) feet of green wire, ans 1(3/4) feet of yellow wire. how many total feet of wire does he need ??
3(1/2)+5(1/3)+1(3/4) = 3(6/12)+5(4/12)+1(9/12) = 9(19/12) = 10 (7/12)
That's how the book explains it. How do I know to go further than 9 and 19/12 as the answer and rather get 10 and 7/12?? How can I gear myself to think in such a way to remember that is a required step?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
If the numerator (top number) of the fraction is greater than the denominator (bottom number) it is an improper fraction and can be reduced. In 19/12, 19 is greater than 12, so it can be changed to the mixed number 1 and 7/12.
