Question 98667: hi, I was trying to do this problem, but i am stuck. the problem is as follows: "the usual toll for the birmingham tunnel is 50 cents. if you purchase a special sticker for 5.50. the toll is only35 cents. at least how many trips through the tunnel are neeeded before the sticker costs less than paying for each trip separately?
i said $5.50 + .35 t with a sticker. t represens trips. then i said .50 without a sticker. i combined them to get 5.50 + .35t _>_(is greater than or equal to sumbol) .50t then i couldn't figure out anything else and im not sure if that work is correct.
any help is definietly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance = )

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Your reasoning so far looks good.
How many trips before the costs are the same?
5.50 + .35t =.50t
5.50 + .35t - .35t =.50t - .35t
5.50 =.15t
t=5.50/0.15
t=36.67
The costs will be the same for 36 and two thirds trips. Any more than that and you are ahead on the cost of the sticker.
So you are ahead on the 37 th trip.
