Question 986448: Here is my question that I can't get the right answer to.

Danny wants to sell his house. He would like to receive $136,000 after deducting the 6% commission due to the real estate agent. What should the selling price for the house be to the nearest dollar?

My answer was $136,00 X .06= $8,160
               8,160 + 136,000= $144,160

My teachers answer is 144,681 so where did I go wrong?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! x = selling price

take 6% of the selling price to get 0.06x. This is the amount the real estate agent gets

The amount danny gets is x - 0.06x = 0.94x

He wants $136,000, so,

0.94x = 136000

0.94x/0.94 = 136000/0.94 Divide both sides by 0.94

x = 144,680.85106383

x = 144,681 Round to the nearest dollar

So the selling price should be $144,681

------
Let the selling price be "x".
----
x - 0.06x = 136000
----
0.94x = 136000
-----
x = 136000/0.94 = $144,680.85
To the nearest dollar that would be $144,681
