Question 985878: can you combine like terms in this question because my mom says you can.
BX to the second power + BX to the third power=BX to the fifth power, is what my mom said
What i said is-BX to the second power + BX to the third power=BX to the second power + BX to the third power
Who is right me or my mom and whoever is right explain why they are right. Thank you!

It's not clear if you mean bx^2 or (bx)^2 but either way they can't be combined.

(bx)^2 * (bx)^3 = (bx)^5 - multiplied, not added.

(bx)^2 + (bx)^3 can't be combined.

eg,
b = 1, x = 5
---
5^2 + 5^3 = 25 + 125 = 150
5^5 = 3125, not the same.
