Question 985436: Mario needed to get his car fixed the total bill was $340 including $220 for parts his mechanic charges $40 per hour how many hours did the mechanic work on the car ? I try solving this by subtracting 340 and 220 I subtracted and got one 120 then I divided that by 40 and got 3 so I assume that's how many hours he worked on the car
my math teacher also set up a table and it's divided into five rows and there's colums on the first column it says input and then there's a blank space and it's parentheses H parentheses and then it says what do we need to find? On the next colum it says how much did the parts for the car cost and then in the next column is says how much did the labor for the repair cost and then next column it says output and it says with this guess what was the total cost of the work on the car and then in the next column it says correct guess yes or no
And then at the bottom There's sections and it says equation so I have to put an equation in there and I need help with it and then it asks what does the variable represent and then it says solution it says I have to write out a solution statement in a complete sentence and then solve the equation to prove your solution a 2nd way

You can put this solution on YOUR website! let's start with the equation
let C represent the total bill, P be cost of parts, M be mechanic charge per hour, H be total hours on job, CL be cost of labor (M * H)
C = P + CL
we are given C = $340, P = $220, M = $40, therefore
340 = 220 + (40 * H)
subtract 220 from both sides of =
(40 * H) = 120
divide both sides of = by 40
H = 3
The mechanic works 3 hours on the car
The total bill varies directly as the cost of parts and the cost of labor.
