You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Hi there,
Jar contains 85 coins
A mixture of quarters and nickels
Quarters = 'x'
Nickels = 'y'
x + y = 85.....(1)
Total value = $11.45
25x + 5y = 1145......(2)
................
x + y = 85........(1)
25x + 5y = 1145....(2)
Multiply (1) by 5
5x + 5y = 425.......(1)
25x + 5y = 1145.....(2)
Take (1) from (2)
20x = 720
x = 36
Substitute x = 6 into:
x + y = 85
36 + y = 85
y = 85 - 36
y = 49
So, there are 36 quarters and
49 nickels.
Hope this helps:-)
