Recently, the Texas Junior College Teachers Association annual conferance was held in Austin. At That time a taxi ride in Austin was $1.25 for the first 1/5 of a mile and $0.25 for each addtional 1/5 of a mile. The distance from one of the convention hotels to the airport is 7.5 miles. If you were to tip the driver of the taxi 15%, how much would it cost to take the taxi from the hotel to the airport?

WE START WITH 1.25 FOR THE FIRST .2 MILES.
THEN WE ADD .25 FOR THE REMAINING 7.3 MILES IN .2 MILE INCREMENTS.
THERE ARE 7.3/.2=36.5 1/5 (OR .2) MILE INCREMENTS.
NOW WE MULTIPLY THESE 36.5 INCREMENTS BY .25=9.125
NEXT WE ADD THESE TWO FEES 1.25+9.125=10.375 FOR THE BASE FEE.
NOW WE MULTIPLY THIS BY 1.15 TO INCLUDE THE 15% TIP.
(1.25+[.25*7.3/.2])1.15
(1.25+[1.825/.2])1.15
(1.25+9.125)1.15
10.375*1.25=$11.93 FOR THE TAXI RIDE.

Remaining Distance = 7.5 - 0.2 miles = 7.3 miles

7.3/(0.2) =36.5 (this is the number of (1/5)th of a mile after the 1st (1/5)th
-----------------------------
Each of these costs 0.25 dollars
36.5*0.25 = 9.125 dollars

Total cost before tip = 1.25+9.125 = 10.375 dollars

15% tip = 0.15*10.375 = 1.55625 dollars

Total cost including tip = 10.375+1.55625 = $11.93
