average = sum /number
2 1/2 + 5 1/2=8
8/2=4
4 is half way between 21/2 and 5 1/2
If the numbers are 21/2 and 51/2, you do it the same way
the sum is 72/2, and half of that is 36/2=18
18 is half way between 21/2 (10.5) and 51/2 (25.5)
