Question 98081: a vending machine takes only dimes and quarters. so far the machine has only taken a total of 30 coins. the amount of money it has collected is $4.20. Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x=number of quarters taken
value of the quarters taken=0.25x
Then 30-x=number of dimes taken
Value of the dimes taken=0.10(30-x)
Now we are told that the value of the quarters taken(0.25x) plus the value of the dimes taken (0.10(30-x)) equals $4.20. So our equation to solve is:
0.25x+0.10(30-x)=4.20 get rid of parens
0.25x+3-0.10x=4.20 subtract 3 from both sides
0.25x+3-3-0.10x=4.20-3 combine like terms
0.15x=1.20 divide both sides by 0.15
x=8---------------number of quarters
30-x=30-8=22------------------number of dimes
CK
0.25*8+0.10*22=4.20
2+2.20=4.20
4.20=4.20
